Herm Sprenger Training Dog Prong Collar
Talking your dog’s language 101: this is the tool to get it done. While a prong collar may look intimidating, when used correctly it’s one of the most effective tools for working through cornerstone training behaviors. I never recommend a tool I haven’t used myself—this is the very collar all three of my dogs used during their training. Specifically, the Herm Sprenger training collar is a trusted brand of prong collar, designed to address pulling and other unwanted leash behaviors. When used properly, it provides a gentle yet noticeable correction that mimics the natural nip of a mother dog, offering clear communication your pup understands. Speaking your dog’s language can be one of the most challenging aspects of training, and this tool helps close that gap.
Dogtra Dog Training Collars
This is the collar I use almost daily for all three of my dogs—I never go on a hike without it. It gives me a strong sense of safety and security, especially living in a state with so much wildlife. The ability to extend the reach of your arm is unmatched in serious situations. Like any tool, it needs to be introduced properly to achieve success. While it’s incredibly useful in critical moments, don’t be fooled—my dogs go wild with excitement when they see these collars come out because they know it means fun is ahead!
Quality Leash
A quality leash is a staple of responsible dog ownership. While there are many types of leashes on the market designed for specific situations, we prefer a standard fixed, short leather leash. This provides the most control in all circumstances. Using the wrong type of leash in the wrong situation can go south quickly, which is why we recommend the standard leather leash for daily use. If my dogs are not on the prong collar shown above, this leash is typically paired with the collar pictured on the right (though occasionally, in a pinch, I’ll use the e-collar shown in the upper right if I forget a collar).
Quality Collar
A good collar, paired with a properly trained dog on a leash, can be one of the most rewarding experiences as a dog owner. Whether you’re walking through a crowded farmer’s market full of dogs and people—overhearing another owner whisper to their pup, “Why can’t you be like that, [insert dog’s name]!”—or just running to the vet for a quick visit, having a reliable, high-quality collar is a necessity. When choosing one, I look for durable, strong material, a clasp system I can count on, and a secure ring for attaching the leash.
